liquid matrix

Lead Artist Dan Corson

Team: Dave Misner, Larissa Wilson, Chuck Harrison, Steve Monsey

Inspired by bioluminescent plankton that creates large, glowing patches in the ocean, this artwork is composed of hundreds of

individually-controlled floats that are woven together into a tightly-controlled matrix of light.

The project has both a strong daytime and nighttime pres-ence.

In the daytime, the project appears as a series of colorful small buoys that rise and pitch ith the waves. The massing and equal spacing of the buoys help demystify the patterns of the waves and allows us to see and analyze larger wave patterns. The patterning of the buoys will have strong coloring that will play in strong contrast to the dark blue-green water.

At night the project takes on a stronger and even more dramatic presence. Each buoy is individually controlled and can act as an individual pixel in a large matrix screen.  A video processor controls the array, and low-resolution video will be composed and played on the giant floating water screen. The slow video animation of this project will be quite dynamic and with the addition of the waves pitching and lifting the buoys- unique to every viewing,  an added complexity and richness will be layered into the project.

From a green design perspective, this project utilizes electroluminescent sheet lighting-a new and incredibly energy-efficient form of lighting. This project will draw less energy than one

household night-light.
